Since 1976, African American History Month has been celebrated nationwide each year throughout the month of February. During African American History Month, we reflect upon and honor the culture and achievements of our country's African American community.

National Museum of African American History & CultureOpens in New Window - The museum’s inaugural exhibitions focus on broad themes of history, culture and community. These exhibitions have been conceived to help transform visitors’ understanding of American history and culture and to help visitors adapt to and participate in changing definitions of American citizenship, liberty and equality.
In Focus: Come Let Us Build a New World TogetherOpens in New Window - Thursday, February 6th at the Portrait Gallery (12:30 p.m./5:30 p.m.)- Celebrate Black History Month as we take a close look at a 1963 Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) poster of John Lewis and the photograph that inspired it.
African American Artists in SAAM's CollectionOpens in New Window- Saturday, February 8th at the American Art Museum (3:00 p.m.)- Dive into the mind of an artist! Join artist and scholar Allan deSouza for a workshop designed to enhance your skills looking, analyzing, and appreciating art. This program focuses on works by African American artists in SAAM’s collection in celebration of Black History Month.
POpens in New Windowortrait Story Days - Saturdays and Sundays throughout February at the Portrait Gallery- Drop by on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to hear a story and create art inspired by someone in the Portrait Gallery’s collection.
